The Workers Revolutionary Party (ΕργατικόΕπαναστατικόΚόμμα, EEK-CRFI) is participating in the upcoming Εuro-elections in May 2014, proposing a revolutionary internationalist program of action against imperialism, a decadent capitalism in crisis, the bourgeois state and fascism.
We fight for the political independence of the working class from every nationalist and other bourgeois influence. We are against the imperialist EU but also against "euro-skepticism" of any color. We participate in the elections to fight for workers' governments in Europe, supported by institutions of workers' power, within the prospect of the unification of Europe on a socialist basis, building the Socialist United States of Europe.
We clearly distinguish our voice and our participation from all reformist, patriotic or bourgeois ballot, of an ethnocentric rejection of the European perspective or of a democratic "make-up” of Fortress Europe.
The DIP (Revolutionary Workers’ Party) has been singled out for a frontal attack by an Islamist national daily newspaper, Yeni Akit, long notorious for its vicious attacks on socialists of all tendencies. The paper has an average circulation of 60 thousand and can be characterised as the most radical Islamist paper that supports Prime Minister Erdogan and the AKP, the party in power.
The 2nd Workers Euro-Mediterranean Conference on “Europe in crisis” successfully took place in Athens, Greece, on 29-30 March 2014, in ESHEA Hall. Representatives from twenty-one (21) organizations as well as many militants in personal capacity from sixteen (16) countries (Greece, Turkey, Italy, Portugal, France, Britain, Finland, Poland, Hungary, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Russia, Cyprus, Iran, South Africa, Argentina). We are publishing below the final declaration voted at the end of the conference.
So it has come to this! As the whole world is aware, the Turkish government of Recep Tayyip Erdogan has taken the step of banning twitter! The government is probably sounding the reaction of the public and planning to ban youtube as well, since that has been the site where all the wiretapped conversations have been posted. These leaked recordings of conversations between the prime minister, other government members, a motley of prominent capitalists, and leading journalists have, in our opinion, definitively demonstrated the depth of the corruption, degeneration, manipulation of the judiciary and heavy-handed interference in the day to day functioning of the media the government has been engaged in for years now. Thus the twitter decision is only one the last link to date in a long chain of violations of the most basic democratic rights. However, its sheer brazenness signals a qualitative change and should not be underestimated.
WE CALL the militant workers and popular organizations and social movements in Europe, and internationally, involved in social struggles against capitalist barbarism today, as well as the forces of the revolutionary Left coming from different traditions, to join us for a 2nd Workers International Conference on the crisis in Europe, for an internationalist alternative and a socialist way out , taking place on March 29-30, 2014, in Athens, Greece.
The prognosis of our previous 1st Workers Euro-Conference held in Athens, in June 2103, has been confirmed: “Reality demolishes the claims that the situation has been stabilized and the euro-zone crisis has receded... The undeniable fact is that “austerity” programs have reached their political limits, and public debt is unsustainable. Nevertheless, all the governments all over Europe continue on the same course of social catastrophe...”
The popularity of Syriza in Greece is having its impact on the left elsewhere. One such case is Turkey. While on visit to Turkey during the Gezi revolt of summer 2013, Tariq Ali proposed a Turkish Syriza. Now, the People’s Democracy Party (HDP) has organised an event in Ankara with Syriza (and Die Linke of Germany) at its centre. The People’s Democracy Party is a fusion of countless Turkish left-wing parties and groups with the Kurdish movement and is poised to become possibly the strongest left-wing party in Turkey. The fact that in a conference on 1 February 2014 that is billed as a discussion concerning “The Search for a New Politics”, it should have seen fit to discuss these questions with Syriza speaks for itself. We are publishing below an article that assesses the programme of Syriza and its leader Alexis Tsipras, written by Savas Mihail-Matsas, the Secretary General of the Workers Revolutionary Party (EEK) of Greece. This article was published in Turkish as well, as an intervention in the debate in Turkey, along with two other articles, one providing a critical evaluation of the new HDP in Turkey and the other of Die Linke in Germany.
The Bosnian cauldron has finally exploded! In a country that was torn by internecine war only two decades ago and languishing since under a bloated and dysfunctional state structure established by the US imposed Dayton Accords of 1995, in a country where the rate of unemployment stands officially at 27.5 per cent, although other estimates put it closer to 45 per cent, and where joblessness among youth aged 18-29 soars officially at 57 per cent, it was only a matter of time for a social explosion to take place. The working class and youth of the city of Tuzla, an industrial heartland, took the initiative on 4 February and the uprising, at its sixth day now, has since spread like wildfire to almost the whole of the Federation of Bosnia and Hercegovina (BiH), with the capital Sarajevo and the major cities of Mostar, Bihac, and Zenica leading the way, as well as the neutral and autonomous Brčko District. The Republika Srpska, on the other hand, has hardly been touched yet.
On Thursday 6 February, the court case involving Mustafa Cihan Yilmaz, a member of the Revolutionary Workers’ Party (DIP), opened in the Mediterranean city of Antalya in the South of Turkey. Our comrade Cihan was being tried along with several members of the Organisation of Socialist Youth, close to another tendency within the socialist movement, for their part in the demonstrations in Antalya in the course of the people’s revolt in Turkey last summer, better known under the name of Gezi Park. Cihan and two of his co-defendants had been kept in prison pending trial for four months. At the end of this first session, the court released Cihan and the other two. Not only this, but the entire manner in which the first session unfolded was a triumph for the people’s revolt and a major political victory for our party.
The Revolutionary Workers’ Party (DIP) of Turkey sent out an appeal to the rest of the Turkish left to intervene in the profound political crisis in Turkey actively as a united front so as to overcome the crisis in a direction consonant with the interests of the exploited and oppressed majority of society. This appeal was sent to over 20 socialist parties and circles and the Kurdish movement and its socialist allies, as well as all the left-wing members of parliament.
Dear comrades,
Today Turkey is going through one of the deepest political crises in its history. The road map drawn by the socialist movements and the forces struggling for the liberation of the Kurdish people is going to play a key role in the developments in this geography in the short and medium run. We, the Revolutionary Workers Party (DIP), are writing this open letter to you because we think that socialist movements in Turkey as well as the political movement of the Kurdish people have currently not adopted a path that is suitable to today’s exigencies.
The Revolutionary Workers’ Party (DIP) of Turkey has issued a program for overcoming the present grave political crisis in Turkey in a manner that will serve the interests of the working class. We publish below the English translation. The original text was written in Turkish.
For an international action plan of revolutionary youth againstunemployment, repression and nationalism
The youth of the world is crushed under the pressure of the consequences of the global capitalist crisis. The entire working class, all the exploited and oppressed, is confronted with a social impasse, which is universal for the young generation, the most sensitive and vulnerable part of the population.
Youth unemployment, exceeding 60% in southern Europe, condemns it to social exclusion. We’re not just facing the results of savage austerity and policies as aresult of Troyka memoranda, but also the miserable failure of capitalist governments to manage the crisis of their own system. The unstopable rise in unemployment dynamics in combination with "flexible" labor relations and thedismantling of the “welfare state” produces social conditions of suffocation.
Turkey is in the convulsions of a massive crisis ensuing from the unearthing of immense corruption that involves government ministers, their sons, including the son of the prime minister Tayyip Erdoğan himself, construction and real estate magnets, the CEO of a major publicly owned bank, and others. We are presenting below a resolution published by the Revolutionary Workers’ Party (DIP) of Turkey. Since the publication of this declaration, a popular movement has made its debut in all parts of Turkey reminiscent of the popular rebellion of this past summer.
Stop the imperialist aggression!
Imperialist troops, fleets, bases and mercenaries out of the Middle East and the Eastern Mediterranean!
The Coordinating Committee for the Refoundation of the Fourth International (CRFI) condemns and opposes resolutely the impending aggression led by US imperialism against Syria and its people. We call on the working class, the poor peasants, the youth and all oppressed peoples in the region and internationally to mobilize against this new crime against the Arab peoples and against humanity, to fight back and defeat imperialism and its plans.
The summer camp of the Revolutionary Workers Party (DIP) of Turkey was held on 28 August-1 September 2013 on the Aegean coast of Turkey facing Greece. The camp was titled “The 75th Anniversary of the Foundation of the Fourth International: From the popular revolt to a workers’ revolution”. Filled with political debate and education in the aftermath of the popular revolt of this past June-July and workshops conceived to develop the organisational skills of its militants, the camp also paid homage to the great Turkish poet Nazim Hikmet and hosted a play on Marx (Howard Zinn’s Marx in Soho), as well as displaying artistic events by the participants.
On the last day of the camp, to the accompaniment of hearty applause, the participants of the camp approved the following declaration on the case of Savas Mihail-Matsas vs. the Golden Dawn.
Savas Matsas, Secretary General of the Workers’ Revolutionary Party (EEK) of Greece, will go on trial on 3 September 2013. He is being accused of “defamation” against the fascist party the Golden Dawn because a leaflet issued by the EEK and published in its newspaper, the New Perspective, in May 2009, had characterised the Golden Dawn as a Nazi organisation that instigates racist attacks against immigrants and called for participation into an anti-fascist demonstration. Other accusations levelled at him are “instigation of violence and chaos” and “disruption of the civil peace”. Presenting themselves as innocent and peaceful citizens, the fascists are using the bourgeois state and its institutions in order to wage an assault on the workers’ opposition and the left. In this way, they intend to silence the left-wing press.
We call on our Egyptian brothers and sisters to join a common fight against all kinds of oppression. Past history bound us together under the yoke of the Sultans and the Pachas. Present history calls us to fight together to bring down all kinds of oppression and exploitation once and for all. Tahrir and Taksim provide us with the will and the power to do so!
The near equality in strength of the two camps contending for power in Egypt led the army to stage a Bonapartist coup. It is not only the recent episode of unprecedented crowds in the millions coming out on 30 June that has made the army move.
The evacuation of Gezi Park by the police on the night of 15 June through the ample use of tear gas, and for the first time chemically enhanced water cannon, has not extinguished the fire of rebellion in Turkey.
True, the insurgency that followed the evacuation, which involved night-long marches and the occupation of squares in the different neighbourhoods of Istanbul and cities all around the country, was short-lived. But from the continuing energy of the masses burst forth new forms of action such as the ‘standing man’ and ‘standing woman’, in which individuals stand silently for hours at a venue where they are not otherwise permitted to demonstrate. This form of action certainly isolates individuals from each other, is not amenable to voicing grievances explicitly, and hence is an inferior modality of protest. But in this specific context, where it was almost impossible to stage actions on Taksim Square it heralded the return of the masses to the hotly contested space and raised the morale of the movement after the setback caused by the evacuation (followed, incidentally, by the evacuation of occupied squares in other cities).
The International Conference on “Europe in crisis: for an internationalist revolutionary alternative”, following the initiative taken in December 2012 by the Coordinating Committee for the Refoundation of the Fourth International (CRFI), has successfully taken place in Athens, Greece on June 9-10, 2013, hosted by the EEK, Greek Section of the CRFI. They participated in the debates and/or brought their messages of support, representatives from over forty(40) revolutionary and anti-capitalist political parties, organizations, social movements, combative trade-unionists, collectivities of workers’ and citizens groups of struggle and individual militants from four(4) continents and twenty(20) countries.
