The Incirlik military base is a scourge not only for the peoples of the region; imperialism has brought the biggest problems to the countries that have collaborated with it. In 1960, when the spy planes that took off from the Incirlik military base to spy on USSR were shot down, it was Turkey which faced the threat. The nuclear weapons that were installed in this base by the US brought Anatolia into the center of war threats both after this event and after the Cuban missile crisis.

So Brexit is here. Fifty-two per cent of the British people voted to leave the EU. This is an historic outcome. Britain, that is to say the world’s fifth and Europe’s second biggest economy, a country where Europe’s foremost financial centre, the City of London, second only to Wall Street in global rankings, is located, one of the three nuclear powers of NATO and the world’s most powerful imperialist country until the mid-20th century, is leaving the EU!

When the December 2013 corruption cases exploded, the people took to the streets to ask account for the corruption. Barricades were set up near Taksim and there was a banner above one barricade. “We are the 99%” and “Let them all go!” said the banner. But who are the “them”? Let us name “them” from left to right: Tayyip Erdoğan, Fethullah Gülen, Abdullah Gül, Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, Mustafa Sarıgül, Devlet Bahçeli… There is one more on the extreme right. Apparently, people who see the banner usually don’t recognise this man. Most ask “Who is this?”.

Since the failed coup attempt of 15 July, there is a lingering suspicion that the United States was aware of the planned coup, may have been consulted before or during the events by some at least of the forces involved in the coup, or perhaps may even have been involved in the planning of the coup plot. This is, at least, very clearly what some major mass media outlets have said in so many words. Reading the pro-Erdogan press in particular, the ordinary Turkish citizen may well ask themselves when and how the Turkish government will break with NATO and the US and perhaps even the EU.

They would not be mistaken in thinking that way. There is not a shred of doubt that the tanker jets that refuelled the fighter jets that bombed many different spots in particular in Ankara, the capital city, that night, including the parliament buildings, took off all night from the Incirlik base near Adana, a base that the Turkish armed forces (TSK in its Turkish acronym) shares with the US military and where, reportedly, up to 60 nuclear warheads are stored. There are many other pieces of evidence that would at least raise suspicion.

Our thoughts will focus and develop on three crucial points brought forward by the DIP: a. the fallacy of “a defeat of dictatorship by democracy”; b. the fallacy that “only the Gulenists are involved in the coup”, and c. the danger of “Syrianization” of Turkey.

The dramatic events that unfolded in Turkey on the night of 15 to 16 July have been excessively confined to the internecine struggle of two different Islamic currents, that of the AKP under the iron fist of Recep Tayyip Erdogan and its latter day nemesis the Gulen fraternity. This is misleading in two senses. On the one hand, it hides from view the distinct possibility or even more and more certitude that other tendencies within the Turkish armed forces (the TSK in its Turkish acronym) were involved in the planning if not the final execution of the failed putsch. On the other, it prevents us from seeing the more fundamental contradiction that besets Turkey today—a contradiction that relates to the country’s position in the world system.

On the night of 15-16 July, Turkey went through a cataclysm that stunned the world: a huge section of the armed forces of the country (TSK in its Turkish acronym) attempted to take power from the government of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and the AKP, came very close to its objective, but was ultimately defeated. Official statements of imperialist countries celebrate the triumph of democracy. Nothing can be farther from the truth. Furthermore, many commentators, remaining captive to the official explanation of the AKP government, point to the followers of Fethullah Gülen, a powerful imam who has been residing in the US for close to two decades now, as the culprit behind the coup. This is a mystification used by the AKP for various purposes, the most important being to ostracise the Gülenists and to hide from view that a much wider array of forces within the army have taken up arms. And on the left and far left, many are filled with excitement at the sight of civilians climbing over tanks and challenging with bare hands the heavily armed soldiers of the putschist forces. This, too, is a very distorted picture.

Eccoci, dunque, all’atto finale del tradimento.

We should meet the workers and the youth, the Afro-American militants of Black Lives Matter and the defenders of the environment where they are in order to convince them that the only realistic solution is for a coalition formed around the core of the working class to take power, by any means necessary. If an independent Sanders candidacy materialises, the movement born thereof should be used to form the long-awaited working-class party that will work to that end. Let us not allow this promising social movement in the US to rot politically.

There has been a massacre in the Ataturk Airport, a terrorist attack which ended the lives of tens of people and wounded hundreds more. At first, we would like to pass our condolences to the families of those who lost their lives, we wish the wounded recover soon, and the numbers of casualties not increase.

Right now, without losing any time, right before burying our deceased and while the injured are still under intensive care, we have to call those responsible to account. We know who the responsible are. Erdoğan, who Syrianized Turkey, and the AKP government are the ones who are the liable. It is striking that those in power have not taken the responsibility of a single one of hundreds of people who lost their lives until today, yet expect applaud for every grams of asphalt and concrete poured on streets. It is not solely an evasion of responsibility. It is, likewise, not just an immorality of regarding everything inferior than the hunger for power. But it is the exact reflection of the psychology of guilt.

July 2, 2016

So here at long last is the final act of betrayal. After years of posturing as the foremost defender of the rights of the Palestinian people, the AKP government of Binali Yıldırım, acting under the authority of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, has signed an agreement with the government of Binyamin Netanyahu of Israel. It has sold out the people of Gaza, under a blockade imposed by Israel since the war of aggression waged against this part of Palestine in 2008-2009 by the Zionist state. Erdoğan has not only reneged on his long-standing demand for the lifting of what has been a devastating blockade, but in effect gone so far as to recognise it and give it its legal seal of approval. The AKP government has, according to the account of the agreement given by Israel, provided the assurance that Turkey will not act in a way that will damage Israeli interests in bodies such as the United Nations or NATO. In effect, Turkey, a country with a history of 64 years of NATO membership, has, for the first time, agreed to allowed Israel to establish an official channel of cooperation with this organisation and this under an Islamist government that poses as a staunch friend of the Palestinian people!

Hursit Kulter, Sirnak provincial steering committee member of the Democratic Regions Party, was last heard from on 27 May 2016 when he was being arrested by security forces. No word has been received from him since. Cases of disappearance under custody had not been seen for years. This practice was a part of the so-called “1993 concept”, which was, in plain parlance, a dirty war waged on civilian Kurdish politicians in the early 1990s. 2015 witnessed a resurgence of the 1993 concept. The case of Kulter unfortunately seems to threaten a rehash of that hideous policy of disappearance as well. We publish here an article written by our friend Ragıp Zarakolu* demanding the return of Kulter alive.

The Turkish daily Cumhuriyet, a century-old republican opinion newspaper in the fold of Le Monde or El Pais, has published a news report on the court case against the six DIP women. Below we publish an English translation of this news article.

The six women militants of the Revolutionary Workers’ Party (DIP) were acquitted on 13 June at the trial in which they were charged with terrorist propaganda in a court in the industrial working class city of Çorlu, west of Istanbul, in European Turkey. This is a great legal and political victory in a time when the Turkish state is engaged in an extreme blackmail that declares any criticism of its deeds in Turkish Kurdistan as “support to and propaganda for terrorism”.

During 3 full days and evenings from March 11th to 13th 2016, about 300 participants from different civil society organisations and radical left forces gathered in Wroclaw (Poland) to exchange experiences on the peripheral situation of the countries of Central and Eastern Europe (CEEC) in cooperation with Southern European, North African and Latin American countries and with the participation by skype of Dr Samir Amin from Egypt and Dr Mazin Qumsyeh from Palestine, in order to outline common political goals for the future. As a result of the 13 sessions on wide ranging issues, like militarization, racism, antifascism, feminism, refugees, neo colonialism, environment, peripherization, workers rights and devastating consequences of the system change in CEEC and the current popular uprisings in Southern Countries, we reached the following conclusions:

May 11, 2016

During the Social Forum of Central and Eastern Europe which took place in Wroclaw, Poland between 11 and 13 March, the voice of Marxism was heard again in this region where bureaucratic workers’ states had been in power for nearly five decades. But this time Marxism was represented not by Stalinism, but by revolutionary Marxism.

The drowning of three-year-old Alan Kurdi in the Mediterranean as his family attempted to reach Greece in an inflatable boat, and pictures of his lifeless little body washing up on the shores of Bodrum on the Turkish Mediterranean coast finally awakened millions, those with any remaining trace of humanity. Yet, if this emotional reaction is not reinforced with a lasting struggle and if the social sensitivity is not transformed into organising and action, the awakening will rapidly wear down, racism and nationalism will arise once again and the plight of migrants and those seeking the right to refuge will once again be papered over.

An international workshop titled “Crises and Victims: A Workshop on Refugees, Migrants, and Anti-Refugee Discourses in a New Way,” organized jointly by the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation, the Karl Polanyi Center for Global Social Studies, and Eszmélet journal, was organized in Budapest on February 26-27, 2016. The meeting was held at a critical conjuncture defined by two related developments. First, European governments have been doing their best to refuse admitting refugees escaping from wars in Afghanistan, Libya, and Syria, which started and/or escalated due partly to direct or indirect intervention of the same European powers. Second, xenophobia and racism, which have been important problems in Europe for a long time, have reached an alarmingly high level. In the workshop progressive and socialist intellectuals from various European countries discussed different perspectives on the contemporary refugee crisis and its possible progressive solutions.

Suicide bombers have this time hit the heart of working class Ankara, the capital and second largest city of Turkey. This is the third in a row for the city: on 10 October, two successive explosions killed more than a hundred people during a demonstration organised by trade unions, demanding peace and expressing solidarity with the oppressed and heavily repressed Kurdish people of the southeast of Turkey. Then, on 17 February, it was the heart of official Ankara that was hit by a suicide bomber in an operation that killed 29 officers and civilian employees working for various armed forces as they were headed home after work. Now, it is the working people of Ankara that have been killed in a bombing attack in Kızılay, both a popular shopping and recreation area and a transportation hub where the metro, municipal buses and the shared taxi system, all serving the labouring masses, cross.

Its contradictions have created conflagration and war in the Middle East, in Africa, in the former Soviet republics and elsewhere, wars that even threaten a Third World War. And it has unleashed a process of environmental degradation that threatens not only our future as humans but all living species.
