The agony of Europe

The 25 May elections to the European Parliament revealed the agonising situation in which Europe finds itself. The conclusions to be drawn from the elections are many: the widespread repudiation of the EU project; the spectacular rise of fascist and quasi-fascist parties and movements (France, Denmark, Greece, Hungary, Austria etc.); the shake-up of the hitherto dominant political system (Britain, Greece, Spain etc.); the misery of what were once colossal parties (the Parti socialiste in France, PASOK in Greece, PSOE in Spain, the Danish social democrats etc.); the entry of hitherto excluded actors into the political arena (the IRA in the Republic of Ireland etc.)—all these and others show that Europe is going through a terrible malaise that is indicative of great upheavals to come. RedMed intends to take these matters up more extensively in the coming days and weeks. However, we also would like to present our readers with immediate assessments of the results in the different countries. We are starting with six countries: Spain, Italy, Greece, Hungary, Denmark, and Finland. We hope to continue with more.
