The Workers Revolutionary Party (EEK) organised a very successful meeting on 6 March 2025 in Athens. The meeting, titled "The Chaos spread by Trump- 3 years after the NATO war in Ukraine + 500 days of genocide in Gaza", was held in the hall of the Union of Journalists of the Daily Press and was broadcast live by Palestine TV:
The speakers were Daria Mitina, secretary of the Central Committee of the United Communist Party (OKP) of Russia, Saïd Gafourov, member of the General Council of the Russian trade union "New Union", a representative of the Palestinian resistance, Giorgos Tsiaras, noted journalist of international affairs at the Greek daily ElSyn and Savvas Michael Matsas of the meeting host EEK. The meeting was moderated by Savvas Stroumpos, a member of EEK:
A written message from another Russian comrade Mikhail B. Konashev, a prominent member of the Association "Soviet Union" and editor of the bimonthly Советское Возрождени, published on our website as well as other sites, was also read at the meeting. This message is what we are publishing below.
Trump, Putin and all others
The first. The changes are happening so fast that many politicians, experts and ordinary people, including me, are unable to properly understand what these changes mean and what results they will lead to.
Second. Despite the number of different publications, there is not enough reliable information about the real policies of Trump, Putin and other key figures, their real goals and, in the end, about the content of the negotiations between Trump and Putin and the so-called compromises of both sides.
Third. The process of change is at the very beginning, and therefore it is too early and even impossible to make any correct estimates and forecasts.
Therefore, bearing these three points in mind, it would be better to wait for some time, at least until the day when the negotiations between Trump and Putin will end with the signing of some kind of agreement, declaration, or at least a statement. However, it can already be said that 1) the new restructuring of the world order has entered a new stage, 2) each side has its own plan and, perhaps, even a geographical map of this new desired world order, 3) the struggle for this new order will be very strong, intense and will inevitably bring the emergence of old and new serious dangers as well as new grounds for the hopes of the left and all ordinary people.
But what, from the point of view of the Russian left, are these dangers? And what are the new grounds for the hopes of the left and all ordinary people?
The Russian authorities, as well as the majority of the left in Russia, believe that a bad peace (between the West and Russia, primarily between the United States and Russia) is better than a good war. However, not every peace, as well as not every compromise, is achievable and acceptable.
At least some authors, and not only leftists, have already talked about the possibility of new peace agreements similar to Minsk 1 and Minsk 2, but much worse. Simply because Minsk-3, as well as Minsk-1 and Minsk-2, can and will be only a temporary pause for the preparation of a new war against Russia, the ultimate goal of which is the complete destruction of Russia. However, all other possible and predictable alternative solutions to the conflict, except the two desirable for the left, are also very bad. Any preservation of modern Ukraine within any borders will mean the preservation of an aggressive political and military foothold, which can and, of course, will be used for a new and possibly more powerful attack against Russia. In this case, the internal situation in Russia, and not only in Russia, for obvious reasons, will be much worse.
The main trends in the Russian media are: 1) general positive attitude towards Trump and his efforts to overthrow the liberal domestic and international policies of the previous American President Biden and unlimited support for Ukraine, but without any illusions; 2) general approval of the rise of right-wing parties in Europe, especially the excellent result of AfG. in the German elections, 3) the general believes that only victory in the war against the Ukrainian fascist regime, which is actually a war against the so-called collective West. Thus, the policy of the so-called ruling elite in Russia, at first glance, remains the same. However, during this war period and thanks to this war, some changes took place in Russia, and in part these changes are positive from the point of view of the left. This is a separate complex and extremely controversial topic, which may not be relevant today.
Finally, two solutions desirable for the left to the conflict, as I understand it, unfortunately, are still impossible for obvious reasons. The first is the uprising of the working class and ordinary people of Ukraine and the creation of a new socialist Ukraine. The second is the transformation of capitalist Russia into a new socialist country, carried out by the working class and ordinary people of Russia. Thus, the real path to a new communist world in both countries, throughout Europe, and finally throughout the world is likely to be very difficult and almost unpredictable, at least for now.
